Seattle Badminton Club App
SBC was founded in 2010 by a group of badminton enthusiasts in the Seattle area.It provides membership service, drop-in service, and ladder tournament on site. Its website offers poor experience of registration for ladder, tournament bracket and event information.
As a badminton lover, I usually go to the club twice a week. I do care about the experience it offers. So I decide to do something as a product designer. I tried to design an app to provide services and information clearly and user-friendly.
The website is the major channel for players to find and register for tournament, manage membership and gain information about the badminton community and regulations. However, the current website has severe usability problems that make it challenging for visitors to achieve their tasks quickly and accurately. Some major usability issues were:
Disorganized and overwhelming content
Confusing IA and navigation
Lack of hierarchy and inconsistent CTA
To convert the “ladder sign up” section into an app which allows players to register and get information quickly and efficiently of the tournament.
Event and membership sign-ups are the main drivers of the revenue.
The app should focus on conversion.
Clean and modern visual will attract more visitors as well as make the app easily maintain.
Shawn, Ladder participant
Shawn is 25-year-old engineer working in Seattle. He is actively engaged in Badminton community. He used to use website to find and register for ladder tournament. He needs efficiently browse through upcoming ladders and register easily. Meanwhile, he can check his performance in the competition.
I talked with players I met in the club in order to uncover the major usabilities of the website and fix them to align with users’ expectations. Current design raises a lot of confusion and there is no access to get the details of every game. It’s hard to track the progress.
Based on research findings, I need to create an app to record progress of tournament, information of players and an efficient way for users to participate the ladders.
