Stela

Reading app

Project overview

Designed and published 30+ classic literature titles (mBooks) for a mobile reading app, transforming public-domain works into elevated digital reading experiences.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Mobile Layout Design: Rearchitected print page layouts specifically for smartphone screens.

  • Illustration Refresh: Vectorized and recolored vintage artwork for modern visual fidelity.

  • Typography: Curated readable, high-contrast type scales and spacing for mobile viewports.

Challenge

  • Public Domain Content: Timeless stories and themes, but original illustrations lack modern visual quality.

  • Format Transition: Moving from print to mobile requires a dedicated layout redesign rather than simply squeezing text and visuals onto a smaller screen.

Visual Refresh("Of All Things"):

Original illustrations were black-and-white, low-res, and aged—lacking modern mobile clarity.
I Converted legacy art into scalable, editable SVG vectors. Enhanced details with fresh color palettes while maintaining the original artist's vintage style.

Typography and Layout Redesign

Redesigning the mBook required more than just updated visuals—the typography and page structure had to be reimagined specifically for modern mobile viewports.

Reflection

Free classic literature serves as the primary gateway for new readers before they subscribe. Our vision is to establish Stela as a enduring hub where communities gather to discuss timeless literature for generations to come.
